‘The Great Gig in the Mind’ - Pink Floyd meets Neuroscience

"Take part in a research project while listening to a Dolby Atmos mix of Great Gig in the Sky" offered the social media post from Pollen Music Group.

Just over a week later, I'm sat in the mixing room of Dolby Labs in Soho Square having an EEG scalp electrode array fitted. Following a brief sequence of staccato piano chords as reference tones, I'm treated to the promised Atmos mix of the classic Floyd track.

In an instant I realise I'm unlikely to ever hear the track in better circumstances. Despite intrinsically knowing the song from many hours of listening, this enveloping sound is filled with surprising detail I had yet to hear and feel. All too quickly it’s over, and the reference tones are repeated. A few follow up questions and my time is up. My individual results, plus a comparison with the consolidated findings from all participants, will be shared in a couple of weeks.

Check back to find out what the research was investigating and their conclusions.
