Championing Water Quality and Ear Health

The River Dart, meandering through the scenic landscapes of Devon, is more than just a natural wonder. It's a lifeline for communities, a hub for recreational activities, and a crucial element of local biodiversity. Among those dedicated to preserving this vital waterway locally is Friends of the Dart, a community interest company (CIC) committed to monitoring and improving water quality in our region.

The Importance of Designated Bathing Sites in the UK

Designated bathing sites are pivotal in ensuring safe and clean swimming conditions. In the UK, these sites are regularly tested for pollutants and contaminants, providing swimmers with the assurance that the water is safe. High water quality standards are essential not only for our health but also for the protection of our precious ecosystems.

Surfers Against Sewage: Holding Polluters Accountable

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is at the forefront of the battle against water pollution. This grassroots movement works tirelessly to safeguard our coastal and river environments from sewage pollution, plastic waste, and other harmful contaminants. Their efforts include rigorous campaigning, community engagement, and scientific research to hold polluters accountable and advocate for policy changes.

Water Quality and Ear Health

The connection between water quality and ear health is significant. Dirty or contaminated water is the leading cause of ear infections worldwide. Swimming in polluted waters increases the risk of exposure to harmful bacteria and fungi, such as:

·       Pseudomonas aeruginosa: A common bacterium found in water that can cause swimmer's ear (otitis externa).

·       Staphylococcus aureus: Often present in polluted water, leading to various ear infections.

·       Aspergillus: A type of fungus that thrives in moist environments and can cause otomycosis.

·       Candida: Another fungal agent that can lead to infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.

These pathogens, commonly found in contaminated water, can cause severe ear infections, leading to discomfort, pain, and potential hearing loss.

The Role of Custom Fitting Swimming Ear Plugs

At Southwest Hearing, we recognize the vital importance of clean swimming water for ear health. To support the invaluable work of Surfers Against Sewage, we donate a portion of the profits from our custom fitting swimming ear plugs to SAS. We believe that clean water is essential for everyone, and protecting it is crucial for our community's health.

Using custom ear plugs is the only surefire way to protect your ears, regardless of water quality. These plugs prevent cold water from entering the ear canal, reducing the risk of developing surfer's ear (exostoses), a condition caused by repeated exposure to cold water. Additionally, even clean water can compact earwax, leading to blockages and infections.

To further enhance ear protection, we recommend using Earol Swim in tandem with your custom fitting plugs. It’s a spray blend of olive oil and tea tree oil designed to prevent trapped water and microbial infestation. This product adds an extra layer of defense, ensuring that your ears stay healthy and infection-free.
